In the VFD market, price differences of 30–60% are common. But quality shows in reliability, efficiency, harmonics, and longevity — not just marketing claims.

Here are the must-check technical criteria (ask for datasheet values + real test reports):

  1. Efficiency & Losses Good: ≥97–98% at full load (total system efficiency) Bad: <95% → higher heat, bigger electricity bill, shorter life Key: Check full-load efficiency curve, not peak value only. Look for low switching + conduction losses.
  2. Harmonic Performance (THD – Total Harmonic Distortion) Good: Input current THD(i) ≤5–8% (IEEE 519 compliant without extra filter) or ≤10–15% with built-in reactor Bad: THD(i) >30–50% → kills power quality, overheats transformers/capacitors, trips breakers Premium: 12/18/36-pulse topology or active front-end (AFE) for <5% THD natively.
  3. Overload & Current Capability Good: 150% overload for 60 s (or 200% for 3–10 s) every 10 min, with real thermal model Bad: Only 110–120% overload, or vague “heavy duty” claim without time rating Critical for fans/pumps (variable torque) vs. crushers/conveyors (constant torque).
  4. Control Accuracy & Torque Performance Good: Sensorless vector / closed-loop vector with ±0.1–0.5% speed accuracy, full torque at 0.5–1 Hz Bad: V/Hz only, torque drop >20% below 10 Hz, hunting or instability at low speed Test: Low-speed torque curve + response time to load changes.
  5. Component Quality & Derating Good: IGBTs from Infineon, Fuji, Mitsubishi, Semikron (not generic Chinese clones) DC bus capacitors: 105°C rated, >100,000 h lifetime Ambient rating: 50°C full load without derating (or clear derating curve) Bad: 40°C max without derating, cheap electrolytic caps, unknown IGBT brand.

  7. Reliability Indicators Good: MTBF >200,000–500,000 hours, field failure rate <0.5–1% after 3 years Bad: No published MTBF, high warranty claim stories, frequent nuisance trips Ask: Real customer references in similar power range + application.
  8. Protection & Diagnostics Good: Advanced IGBT short-circuit protection, phase-loss detection, thermal model + PTC input, detailed fault log (last 10–50 events) Bad: Basic overcurrent only, no history, vague error codes.

Quick Red Flags of Low-Quality VFDs

  • No detailed datasheet (or copied from competitors)
  • “Universal” claims without application-specific ratings
  • Very low price + unknown brand + no UL/CE/CCC certification
  • High THD without mitigation → future downtime cost
  • Overpromised overload without thermal/time limits

Bottom Line A “cheap” VFD often costs 3–10× more in downtime, energy, motor replacement, and harmonic filters over 5–10 years. Invest in specs, not hype. Demand test data, not promises.
